Did you know…
Each year in the U.S., more than 23,000 foster youth “age out” of the foster care system. Between 700-1,100 age out in Pennsylvania each year.
1 in 10 youth between the ages of 18-25 will experience homelessness in this period of life.
20% of foster youth who age out will experience homelessness within 18 months of aging out.
7 in 10 young women who have been in foster care will be pregnant by the age of 21.
Foster youth are 3 times more likely to experience mental health disorders, and youth who are homeless are over 4 times more likely to attempt suicide when compared to the general public.
Only 40% of youth who aged out achieve full-time employment within 2 years of aging out.
We are committed to changing these outcomes.
Our Services
-
Through our Residential Program, which is where Bethany House began, we support young women ages 18-24 who are aging out of foster care or at risk of experiencing homelessness.
Through our Community-Based Housing and Resource Center, we have the freedom to provide individualized case management to those who either do not qualify for our Residential Program (due to factors like age or gender), as well as those who are on our waitlist for our Residential Program.
-
Our services are built on our Three Pillars; Housing, Case Management, and Mental Health Support.
These three pillars are incorporated in unique ways for our Residents and clients in our Community-Based Housing, while clients of our Resource Center mainly utilize the support of case management.
-
In our Residential Program, each resident is supported with all three of our pillars. Residents each have a private bedroom in a home with shared living space (kitchen, bathrooms, and living room). Residents participate in weekly, intensive case management, and have access to their case manager outside of their meeting time as needed. Residents also are required to participate in therapy through our contracted provider, Safe Haven Counseling and Therapeutic Services. Safe Haven’s therapist is licensed and specializes in trauma and foster care, allowing our residents to receive quality care that is tailored to meet their unique needs.
As our Residents gain the skills and resources to increase their independence, they are prepared to participate in our Community-Based Housing.
-
In our Community-Based Housing program, former residents are housed with local landlords and sign a lease that is independent of Bethany House. They continue to receive case management and therapy support with the intent to wean off of the support from Bethany House as they maintain their independence. However, Bethany House reminds each young woman that we are a standing resource and that they are welcome to return at any point that they find themselves in need of assistance or a piece of advice or encouragement.
-
Bethany House also exists as a resource in our community, where our case management services are offered through our Resource Center to any emerging adult that would find themselves in need of this support. For youth who engage in our Resource Center, services are directed by the needs of the individual and are frequently shorter in duration and more solution driven. Clients in the Resource Center may need assistance with something as small as applying for housing, or more long-term support like creating and maintaining a budget. No matter the need, Bethany House works to either provide the service or connect the individual with the local service provider that is better suited to address their need.
